i4i Invention for Innovation

i4i Life Sciences Accelerator programme – spaces still available.

The i4i Life Sciences Accelerator programme has been developed by the NIHR and experienced medtech industry experts to help researchers who are applying for funding to improve their chances of success.

The next i4i Life Sciences Accelerator programme takes place in two parts:

Wednesday 15 February (evening) to Friday 17 February

Tuesday 6 March to Wednesday 7 March

Based on the highly successful Henley Accelerator, the i4i Life Sciences Accelerator programme provides specialist advice and support to help participants develop their business skills and enable them to construct well-crafted applications and business plans. Centre for Professional Development

The Centre for Professional Development has begun running a variety of short courses over the last few months, and on 15 and 16 May 2012 May they are hosting a course on ‘Commercialising Academic Medical Research’.  This course would be relevant to a lot of research staff.

Birmingham Research Training Collaborative

Provides education and training for healthcare researchers in Birmingham. Training is free for employees of members institutions (including NHS). Courses and workshops include Good Clinical Practice, informed consent, research governance and ethics, turning a research idea into a research proposal

University of Birmingham Short Courses

Continuing professional development courses on statistics, epidemiology, systematic reviews, critical appraisal

Oxford University Continuing Professional Development Courses

Short courses on ethics, RCTs, statistical methods, qualitative research design, clinical epidemiology and evidence based healthcare, systematic reviews

Critical Appraisal

Birmingham Critical Appraisal Skills Programme

Aims to develop an evidence-based approach in health and social care. Workshops and training offered on appraising systematic reviews, RCTs, economic evaluations, cohort studies, qualitative research, case-control studies



Epidemiological Methods Training

University of Bristol Basic Epidemiology

Training on the use of exposure measures, incidence and prevalence, risk, odds ratios, study designs, sample size calculation, bias and confounding



Clinical Trials

Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit

Research methods for clinical trials courses, including systematic reviews and meta-analysis, trial design, protocol development, trial management, funding and research costs

Imperial College Introduction to Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials

2 day course providing an introduction to the main statistical ideas and techniques that are used in the design and analysis of clinical trials

Courses on conducting and appraising systematic reviews, and links to regional training events and systematic review courses

Health Economics

University of Birmingham Introduction to Health Economics

Introduces the basic principles of health economics and the basic knowledge needed to interpret and appraise applied studies in health economics. Covers health and health care systems, economic valuation methods and the interface between health economics and health policy.

University of Birmingham Advanced Health Economics Course

Training on health and health outcome measures, economic modelling and evaluation, equity and efficiency in healthcare

University of Oxford: Introduction to Health Economic Evaluation

A one-day course designed to provide a basic understanding of health economic evaluation

University of Bristol: Introduction to Health Economics

3 day course for clinicians, public health specialists and researchers who are, or will be, involved in the conduct of research projects that evaluate the cost-effectiveness of health care

University of Hertfordshire Statistical Services and Consultancy Unit

Short courses on statistics, data analysis (for a range of levels of competence), survey design, programming
